my method of advertising my forum (which has over 60000 posts in 2 years)
the
forum promotion forum on here is ok, as long as your forum has strict
rules on advertising. some people go through all of the promotion
threads, join every one of them just to advertise their own forum and
never come back, so to discourage this, ban advertising altogether or
make it stricter, like you have to have over a certain amount of posts,
or only advertise in signatures. a lot of members who come from here
have been of the spammy sort, but since removing the advertising forum, i
have got a better quality of members as theres no incentive for the
spammers to post.
if you make a thread on a forum advertising your forum, make it an interesting one:
1.
dont exaggerate-putting that your forum is the best forum ever is
exaggeration, as that probably isnt true. if you do say something like
that your forum is the biggest or most active forum in its subject, it
needs to be true. give honest information about your forum which makes
people want to join, talk about the features your forum has, statistics,
link to the best threads your forum is having at the moment, give
information about competitions you are running...this is what people
want to see in an advertising thread
2. dont be aggressive with
advertising. i see some people posting things such as "join now!" or
making the thread title "join my forum!" (which doesnt work, as people
look through the promotion thread looking for forums of a specific
subject, so "join my forum" isnt going to help that). it gives no reason
at all for people to want to join, and if you bump your post with "join
my forum!" it sounds rude.
3. "join my forum and i will join
yours" doesnt work. its not a guarantee that the person will be active
or even make decent threads.....or even post! they just want you to join
their forum and post. most of the time you dont get an active member
out of it, i used to accept offers like that when i started out, but 2
years later, none of them are active, in fact, most of them made about
10 one sentence long posts in off topic, advertised their forum and left
never to return again. i tried to be active on their forums, but i
simply did not have the interest in the subject, or there was nothing
for me to reply to as the admin was too lazy to add threads before they
started getting members.
4. before advertising on a forum, read
the rules and follow them-if you dont follow other forums rules, people
will think you are a spammer, and having a lot of warnings and bans for
spamming wont make people think you are a good admin. if the forum does
not allow advertising, dont advertise. if it does, follow their rules
about content, how often you can bump, and make sure you have enough
posts to advertise. even if there are no clear rules on advertising, it
is still rather rude to advertise your forum on theirs without
contributing, so make sure you post on their forum instead of just
advertising and leaving. it benefits your forum as well, if members like
you, they will be more likely to join your forum, and if you only join a
forum for advertising, members find it annoying, as well as the admins,
so are less likely to follow your link. if you want to advertise on a
forum, at least think of other reasons besides the advertising allowed
there, that makes you want to join-if you would not join this forum if
you did not have a forum to promote, dont join it to promote.
5.
make sure you have something to advertise. its best to get the forum
looking somewhat decent before advertising, not sticking a post up as
soon as you have created the forum and added a few categories and
forums. before starting advertising, spend some time getting graphics
created, choosing a style, a set of rules, starting threads (and doing
post exchanges or inviting friends to get the forum looking active). if
you dont do this, it wont make a good impression, as theres nothing to
impress members. theres been so many times ive thought someones forum
promotion thread looks good, clicked the link, and found that most of
the forums have 0 threads in, then immediately click the back button on
my browser. i always start with five threads in each forum.
my favourite method of promotion-adding a signature link on forums that i am well known and active on
requires no effort as posting on forums is not a job, its fun, and
people who see my interesting and useful posts on the forum will
consider looking at mine.
theres other ways to advertise too,
like creating a facebook page for your forum, for members to like, then
their friends will see it, and the ones who are interested will like it,
and find your forum. you can also advertise in the real world, like
create business cards to hand out, it especially works if you go
somewhere where there is likely to be a lot of fans of the subject your
forum is about.
